About Us

Note from the President

Women of The University Club, greetings to all of you and a Happy New Year. Our organization was founded back in 1917, and our mission is to promote the interaction of women of all ages and affiliations who are interested in the University of Iowa and the surrounding Iowa City community. We are a 700-member Social Club and we socialize primarily in three ways: Our Luncheon and Speaker Programs, held monthly September through May at the Radisson Hotel; Our Newcomers’ Division, which serves as an introduction to our Club for women new to Iowa City or to The University Club; and our over thirty Interest Groups. University Club membership is not limited to those associated with the University of Iowa or it’s alumni. Annual Membership is $20 (or $25 after October 1st).

A Membership Survey was distributed at the Fall Fair, within our Interest Groups, and was published in the last issue of the Clarion newsletter. We’ve had a great response with over 150 women completing the survey. Thanks to all who provided input and suggestions. The responses were very consistent and reflected positively on the Club. We learned that most women joined The University Club after hearing about it from a friend or neighbor. The majority of comments reflected that our Members like things the way that they are currently being done. Most Members indicated that they prefer getting information from the Clarion newsletter, our website, and Social Media. There was very little interest in using more online technology (such as a monthly email to Members, the ability to make reservations online, or to pay online). However, since it’s also important to remain current to attract new Members, we’ll want to consider the ways prospective Members communicate in their daily lives and incorporate some of those methods into our Club’s processes in the future. If you haven’t yet completed the survey, please find it in the previous Clarion. We’re interested in your feedback and suggestions

In this issue of the Clarion, you’ll find an article about a few proposed Bylaws wording revisions to be voted upon by our Membership at our March Business Meeting and Luncheon. Please join us in March to learn more and to discuss Club Business.

Welcome to our newest Members. I hosted a President’s New Member Tea at my home this past October and we had a lovely time getting to know each other and talking about The University Club and Iowa City in a more intimate setting.

Wishing you a Happy New Year, and I hope to see you at a University Club event sometime soon.
